SINFONICA has now reached an exciting milestone: two years of dedicated work towards developing effective strategies, tools, and methods for Cooperative Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) solutions. The project has a clear and ambitious vision: to ensure that the deployment of CCAM is inclusive, equitable, and sustainable for all citizens, regardless of their background or specific mobility needs.

The Vision and Mission of SINFONICA

At its core, SINFONICA aims to engage a diverse range of CCAM stakeholders, including citizens (with special attention to vulnerable groups), transport operators, public administrations, service providers, and technology suppliers. Through dialogue and collaboration, we are committed to understanding their needs, desires, and concerns. This feedback is the cornerstone of co-creating decision-support tools for policymakers, designers, and city planners, helping them roll out CCAM solutions that are not only technically sound but also socially inclusive and user-friendly.

Testing and validating these strategies in real-world environments across Europe ensure that the results can be scaled up and tailored to local needs, empowering communities and enhancing the quality of CCAM solutions.

What We have Achieved in Two Years

Over the past two years, the SINFONICA team has engaged with more than 5.000 people across Europe, particularly focusing on four key municipalities involved in the project: Noord Brabant (Netherlands), West Midlands (UK), Hamburg (Germany), and Trikala (Greece). These discussions have shed light on the current perceptions of CCAM and the specific requirements that different regions and demographic groups have when it comes to mobility.

In addition to direct engagement, we have conducted several detailed analyses, all available for download on the SINFONICA website (here). These documents offer insights into the needs of European citizens and CCAM stakeholders, such as:

D1.1 – Mobility Needs and Requirements of European Citizens

D1.2 – CCAM Vocabulary and Stakeholders’ Needs for CCAM Solutions

D1.3 – Understanding the Gap in CCAM Solutions Deployment

D5.1 – Equity Practices and Social Indicators

D2.3 – Generic Simulation Framework for CCAM Solutions

Furthermore, the project has participated in over 25 events globally, not only strengthening networks but also sharing our vision with stakeholders across continents.

What to Expect in Year Three

As we enter the final year of the SINFONICA project, we are gearing up for an exciting phase of dissemination and action. Here’s what’s coming:

  • Workshops and Events: We will host workshops and events across Europe to present the results of our work, facilitate discussions with stakeholders, and begin drafting policy recommendations. These workshops will target policymakers, service providers, and other stakeholders to shape the future of CCAM.
  • A Tool for Scaling Impacts: Our team is developing a tool designed to maximize the impact of CCAM solutions on mobility systems. This tool will support large-scale deployment by offering tailored insights for different local contexts.
  • The SINFONICA Knowledge Map Explorer: one of our key innovations, the SINFONICA Knowledge Map Explorer, will provide an intelligent and user-friendly interface to access the vast knowledge base we’ve built. This tool will help users — whether city planners, transport operators, or citizens — navigate CCAM solutions and receive tailored guidelines that fit their specific needs. It will promote CCAM solutions that are inclusive, equitable, and accessible for all.

Looking Ahead

As we approach the final stretch of the SINFONICA project, we are committed to delivering a strong finish. The progress made so far is just the beginning, and we are excited to finalize and share the innovative tools and strategies we are developing. Together with our community of stakeholders, we aim to ensure that CCAM solutions are accessible, equitable, and capable of transforming mobility across Europe.

Stay tuned — this is just the start of something great!
